The machinist who rejected batteries

DynaVap was founded by George Breiwa, a machinist and engineer from Stoughton, Wisconsin. Breiwa’s background was in precision metalwork—not cannabis, not consumer electronics, not marketing. He approached the problem of thermal extraction the way a toolmaker approaches any problem: with metal, tolerances, and thermal physics.

His insight was deceptively simple: a battery is a point of failure. Electronics degrade. Circuits corrode. Lithium cells lose capacity. But a piece of machined stainless steel with precisely calculated thermal mass will perform identically on day one and day one thousand. No firmware updates. No charging cables. No planned obsolescence.

Breiwa prefers the term “selective thermal extraction” over “vaporizer.” The distinction matters. A DynaVap device does not electronically regulate temperature. Instead, it uses the thermal mass of machined metal components and a temperature-indicating cap (the “Captive Cap”) to provide audible feedback when the extraction temperature is reached. The user applies external heat—a torch lighter, an induction heater, or any flame source—and the cap clicks when ready. Two clicks on heat-up. Two clicks on cool-down. Physics, not software.

Engineering from the lathe

DynaVap devices are machined from custom-drawn tube stock. The raw material is drawn at the mill in variable wall thicknesses specifically for DynaVap’s components. This is not mass-produced commodity tubing cut to length—it is purpose-manufactured stock designed for the thermal and structural requirements of each part.

The VapCap M (the entry-level device) is machined from 316L stainless steel with no tools required for assembly or disassembly. Four parts. Complete serviceability. Every component is replaceable, and every DynaVap device is cross-compatible with the broader DynaVap ecosystem—tips, stems, caps, and condensers interchange across models and generations.

The Omni line uses Grade 2 titanium for the tip and condenser, reducing thermal mass for faster heat-up and cool-down. The VonG integrates a 10mm or 14mm glass joint, allowing direct connection to hydrated filtration devices without adapters. The WoodWynd uses sustainably sourced Ipe hardwood for the stem, adding natural thermal insulation and a tactile warmth that metal alone cannot provide.

Thermal physics over digital convenience

The DynaVap heating model is governed by the laws of thermodynamics, not a microprocessor. The Captive Cap is a precision component: a bimetallic disc inside the cap flexes at a specific temperature, producing an audible click. The user heats the cap with an external source, the disc clicks at approximately 410°F (210°C), and extraction begins. The position of heat application on the cap determines the session character: heating the tip produces cooler, more flavorful draws; heating the base produces denser, hotter vapor.

This is thermal titration in its purest form—no presets, no app, no Bluetooth. The user learns the device through repetition, developing an intuitive understanding of heat application, timing, and airflow that is impossible to replicate with a digital interface.

The newest M+ features a redesigned tip with relocated thermal mass, a deeper bowl with thinner walls (12-15% larger payload), and a geometric exterior pattern that creates convection heating around the chamber. The cooling fins are gone—their mass has been pushed below the bowl to extend the extraction window within a single heat cycle.

Indefinitely. There are no batteries to degrade, no circuits to fail, no heating elements to burn out. The cap’s click disc may lose precision over years of heavy use, but caps are inexpensive replacement parts.
