Combustion vs Controlled Thermal Extraction
Why temperature control matters and how titration differs from burning plant material.
Combustion and controlled thermal extraction are not the same thing.
Combustion means burning. Controlled thermal extraction means using heat intentionally to release target compounds without relying on flame.

Combustion is blunt force
When plant material burns, smoke is created. Smoke contains particles, irritants, and combustion byproducts. The CDC states that cannabis smoke contains many of the same toxins, irritants, and carcinogens as tobacco smoke.
That is why Pixie’s Pantry treats combustion as a different category than controlled extraction.
Combustion gives you flame. Controlled thermal extraction gives you settings. One is a burn event. The other is a system.
Controlled thermal extraction is about control
Controlled thermal extraction, or CTE, uses heat to release compounds from botanical material without intentionally burning it.
The goal is not to make the biggest cloud possible. The goal is repeatability.
Temperature, draw speed, chamber size, grind consistency, moisture level, and airflow all change the session. That is why the device matters so much. A poorly controlled heater can overshoot. A bad airpath can contaminate the experience. A weak chamber design can scorch material unevenly.
Temperature control is only valuable if the device is actually stable.

Titration means gradual adjustment
Titration is a simple idea: Start carefully, adjust gradually, and pay attention to response.
In hardware terms, titration can include:
- Lower starting temperatures.
- Smaller chamber loads.
- Slower draw speed.
- Shorter sessions.
- More consistent grind.
- Dosing capsules.
- Clear session notes.
- Careful step-up temperature changes.
Pixie’s Pantry does not present temperature ranges as medical dosing instructions. Devices measure heat differently, and the temperature on a screen is not always the exact temperature of the botanical material.
But practical ranges can still help customers understand the idea:
Lower temperatures: usually emphasize lighter extraction and more volatile aroma compounds.
Middle temperatures: often balance flavor and fuller extraction.
Higher temperatures: may extract more heavily but can increase harshness and the risk of scorching if the device is poorly controlled.
The rule is simple: Temperature control should create more control, not more confusion.
Why prep matters
Even the best device can perform badly with poor prep.
A fluffy grind, tight pack, wet material, dry material, dirty screen, clogged chamber, or inconsistent draw can change airflow. Airflow changes heat transfer. Heat transfer changes extraction.

AVB proves the difference

That leftover material is not standardized and should be handled carefully, but it teaches an important concept: if the material was not burned, something remains. The texture, color, smell, and usefulness of AVB can tell you a lot about how evenly your device extracts.

The science of thermal degradation
Combustion occurs when organic material reaches its ignition point—approximately 451°F (233°C) for dried botanical material. Above this threshold, pyrolysis breaks down plant compounds into hundreds of byproducts, many of which are harmful: benzene, toluene, naphthalene, carbon monoxide, and fine particulate matter.
Controlled thermal extraction operates in the 330–430°F range, well below the combustion threshold. In this zone, volatile compounds (terpenes, flavonoids, and active cannabinoids) evaporate without the plant material itself igniting. The result is vapor rather than smoke—an aerosol of evaporated compounds without the combustion byproducts.
This is not a subtle difference. Studies on vaporized vs combusted botanical material consistently show that vapor contains significantly fewer harmful compounds while delivering equivalent or higher concentrations of active ingredients.
Temperature precision and the combustion boundary
The gap between effective extraction (~400°F) and combustion (~451°F) is only about 50 degrees. A device with poor temperature accuracy (±20°F) can easily cross that boundary during normal use.
