Hydrated Filtration Devices Explained
Hydrated filtration devices—commonly called water pipes, bubblers, or rigs—use water as a cooling and filtration medium. At Pixie’s Pantry, we use the term “hydrated filtration” because it describes the actual function: water cools and humidifies vapor before it reaches your lungs.
How water filtration works
Vapor or smoke passes through a downstem submerged in water. As the gas travels through the liquid, three things happen simultaneously:
- Cooling: Water absorbs heat from the vapor, reducing temperature before inhalation
- Filtration: Water-soluble irritants and particulates are trapped in the liquid
- Humidification: The vapor picks up moisture, making it smoother on the throat
Types of filtration

Material considerations
Hydrated filtration hardware is available in borosilicate glass, soft glass, silicone, and steel. Borosilicate remains the preferred material for taste neutrality and cleaning ease. The material of the downstem and joint connections matters just as much as the body material.

We intentionally avoid slang terminology in the catalog. “Hydrated filtration device” accurately describes the engineering function and positions our catalog within a clinical, standards-based framework. It also improves search clarity for patients, caregivers, and technical buyers who may not be familiar with colloquial terms.
