The origin of precision vaporization

In 1996, Markus Storz began developing herbal “Hot Air Generators” in his workshop in Tuttlingen, Germany—a town with nearly 500 medical device manufacturers and a 150-year reputation as the center of German surgical instrument production. This was not a coincidence. From the very beginning, Storz approached vaporizer design with the rigor and documentation standards of the medical device industry.

Jürgen Bickel joined as partner shortly after, and together they founded Storz & Bickel GmbH & Co. KG. Their first product, the VOLCANO Classic, entered the market in 2000. It was the first fully functional herbal hot air generator that performed well enough for scientific researchers to take notice. Within years, it became the “gold standard” for vaporization studies—a distinction it still holds. When scientists need a controlled, repeatable vaporization platform for peer-reviewed research, they reach for a Volcano.

Engineering philosophy

Storz & Bickel devices are engineered in Tuttlingen and manufactured in their own facility under ISO 13485 quality management—the same standard that governs pacemakers, surgical instruments, and implantable devices. This is not a marketing claim. Their factory has been independently audited and certified by TÜV SÜD, one of the most respected certification bodies in the world.

Every Storz & Bickel device uses a patented convection/conduction hybrid heating system. Air is heated to a precise temperature (±1°C accuracy), passes through the botanical material, and extracts volatile compounds without combustion. The airpath is fully isolated from the electronics. Materials in the vapor path are limited to medical-grade stainless steel, pharmaceutical-grade aluminum, borosilicate glass, and food-safe polymers.

Their dosing capsule system is an engineering marvel in simplicity: a stainless steel capsule that holds a pre-measured dose, keeps the oven clean, and enables rapid reloading. It transforms session prep from an open-ended variable into a controlled, repeatable process.

Medical certification and regulatory status

Storz & Bickel is currently the only vaporizer manufacturer in the world with active medical device certifications under the new EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR). Their VOLCANO MEDIC 2 and MIGHTY+ MEDIC have passed the most stringent quality requirements in the industry:

• (DIN) EN ISO 13485:2016 — Quality Management System for medical devices
• EU Regulation (EU) 2017/745 — The new EU Medical Device Regulation (replacing the older MDD)
• MDSAP — Medical Device Single Audit Program with country-specific requirements for Australia (TGA), Canada (Health Canada), and the United States (FDA)

The audit was conducted by TÜV SÜD and Storz & Bickel passed with outstanding results. The VAPORMED medical product line is distributed in Europe, Canada, Israel, and other markets.
