How to Read a Product Spec Sheet

Marketing copy tells you what a brand wants you to believe. A spec sheet tells you what the product actually is. Learning to read specifications critically is the single best defense against overhyped, under-engineered hardware.

Key specs to evaluate

Material

Look for specific grades, not generic terms. “316L stainless steel” is a spec. “Premium metal” is marketing. “Borosilicate glass” is a spec. “Durable glass” means nothing. If the manufacturer does not disclose exact grades for materials in the contact path, that is a red flag. See our full Materials Glossary.

Temperature range and accuracy

Check both the range (e.g., 300–430°F) and the accuracy (±1°C vs ±10°F). A wide range with poor accuracy gives you less real control than a narrow range with tight accuracy. Reference our Temperature Guide for ideal ranges.

Heating method

Conduction (direct contact), convection (hot air), induction (magnetic), or hybrid. Each has tradeoffs in heat-up time, extraction uniformity, and maintenance. Convection and hybrid systems generally score higher in the audit.

Battery

Look for mAh rating (capacity), whether it is removable, USB-C vs micro-USB charging, and pass-through charging capability. A sealed, non-removable battery with micro-USB charging is a sign of corner-cutting.

Chamber size

Usually measured in grams (0.1g–0.5g for portables). Larger is not better—it means you must pack more material for proper extraction. Match chamber size to your typical dose.

Airpath

Does the spec sheet explicitly state the airpath is isolated? Does it describe what materials the air touches? If the airpath section is missing entirely, question why.

Red flags

  • No material grades listed anywhere
  • “Proprietary technology” with no explanation
  • Temperature shown as “3 presets” with no degree values
  • No mention of airpath design
  • Warranty that excludes normal wear parts
